What you need to know

There are a few things you should know about FoxyCart before signing up.

Pricing: $19/mo

FoxyCart is free during development (while using a test payment gateway). Once you need to use a live payment gateway, the cost is $19/mo, with no sign-up or cancellation fees.

No Hidden Fees

FoxyCart does not charge per-transaction fees, cancellation fees, or any other fees except for the “custom subdomain” and additional downloadable storage space. Please be aware, however, that FoxyCart is not a gateway, so you will still likely pay fees for your merchant account provider.

Storage Space

Included with every store is a minimum of 100MB of space for downloadables. Additional storage space is available at very reasonable rates. Contact us for details using the form at the right.

Custom Subdomains

The standard FoxyCart monthly package includes a checkout URL like yourdomain.foxycart.com. You can, however, elect to use a custom subdomain such as checkout.yourdomain.com with only a small change to your DNS records. Because a separate domain requires a separate security certificate, there is an additional annual fee to cover that cost.

Why “hosted” is sometimes OK

FoxyCart is a hosted solution, but it’s not what you think. We promise ;)

Completely Customizable. Really.

FoxyCart is far more flexible than the average self-hosted ecommerce platform. You can use your own templates and images on your own server. FoxyCart will automatically and securely cache them so you don’t even need to bother with a separate file upload process. No duplication of data.

It’s actually easier to integrate

Because we’ve built FoxyCart from the ground up for integration into other systems, it’s much easier to integrate. Simply parse the XML that you receive (every minute, when there are orders) and do with it what you will. Compare that to dirty core hacks with self-hosted apps.

Easier to setup & maintain

Ever set up a site for a client using a self-hosted ecommerce platform, only to have a critical security issue pop up 2 months after the project finishes? We have. It’s lame. Especially if you had to hack the core to get the damn thing working in the first place.

We do the maintenance for you, so you can truly set it and forget it.

Security

If you’re setting up the average online store, odds are that it’s on shared hosting, that your client isn’t PCI or SafeHarbor certified, and that installing an SSL cert is the last thing you want to do.

We’re constantly testing and hardening our systems to keep your stores secure. Not to say that you couldn’t do it, but you probably have better things to do.

It’s cheaper

Between the costs for SSL certificates, compliance (PCI, SafeHarbor), reliable hosting, backups, software (if you’re not going open source), security scanning, and other costs, FoxyCart is actually cheaper than hosting an ecommerce app on your own.

Not to mention your time, which most certainly isn’t free.

We’re not against self-hosted ecommerce, but sometimes it doesn’t make sense. For those times, there’s FoxyCart.

not for everybody

Not an “all in one” solution

FoxyCart isn’t a gateway, merchant account, order management system, or etc. For more information on gateways and merchant accounts please read this FAQ. For information about why FoxyCart doesn’t attempt to do everything please read this FAQ about inventory management.

Javascript

FoxyCart relies extensively on javascript to make the checkout process easier for the customer. If the bulk of your visitors are not using modern browsers (IE6+, Firefox 2+, Opera 9+, Safari 3+, etc.), FoxyCart is probably not for you.
