So we get a lot of people saying stuff like, “I’m going to use [insert name of ecommerce system here] because this site has 60 products, but I have a site that only has one product that FoxyCart would be perfect for.” While we certainly understand that, and agree that in certain situations an ecommerce platform that has a built in CMS does make sense, we’ve been feeling a little bit defensive about FoxyCart’s ability to handle large stores.
We love MODx, no secret there. But what might not be clear is that MODx + FoxyCart makes a perfect system for all your ecommerce needs, regardless of product count. (Actually, there are limits to MODx’s document count currently, but they’re pretty high and should be resolved with the next version. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong. 5,000 pages is probably as high as you want to go with MODx currently.)
TheTrendz.com sells diamond engagement rings and other diamond jewelry. They have hundreds of products in dozens of categories and subcategories.
To allow the greatest flexibility with their product catalog, they set up tags for their products, such as “diamond”, “gemstone”, “pendant”, “ring”, “journey”, “mens”, “womens”, etc. Each product can have multiple tags, and can be listed in multiple categories.
Additional TVs were set for data like the price, color/clarity of the diamonds, type of gold, and product image. The flexibility of MODx allows unlimited options for their products, which is always nice.
Using Firebug and the Firefox Web Developers Toolbar, tweaking the FoxyCart “text” theme to match their site took only an hour or two, including design time in Illustrator (to create the text backgrounds).
Check out an example journey diamond ring to see the cart and checkout in action, but please note that IT’S A LIVE STORE, so don’t order anything you don’t want to buy ;)
